The Sonata is a mid-sized car manufactured by Hyundai in 1985. Originally, it was essentially a facelifted Hyundai Stellar with an upgraded engine.

Its first generation had cruise control, power seats, washers and power-assisted brakes. There were just two trim levels, Luxury and Super and both were marketed to the ‘Luxury Market’ with Hyundai’s tag line communicated, ‘Luxury car for VIPs.’

Unfortunately, the car was received as a new Stellar which did not have a fantastic reputation and as a result, sales were seriously affected. In a bid to highlight the differences between the two vehicles, Hyundai added two-tone bodywork, but this didn’t help. The unit sales were so bad that Hyundai pulled the car from the market in December 1987.

After Hyundai brought back the all-new Sonata as a stand-alone vehicle, a number of changes and facelifts were made to allow the car to better suit its market. Hyundai launched in Northern America and Europe with the intention of competing with vehicles such as the Ford Granada Scorpio. They priced the Sonata at a significantly lower price in a bid to coax loyal Ford customers away.

Now, the Sonata is almost unrecognizable, with the 8th generation launched in South Korea in 2020. The first 2020 models were showcased at the New York International Auto Show, the design was undeniably sporty and less conservative than its predecessors.

Two engine variants available were 1.6-liter 180 hp and 2.5-liter 198 hp. The cars were built with smart cruise control, forward collision assist, auto high beam and lane keep assist.

In terms of safety, the package includes a 3 radar system with 5 cameras around the vehicle. Following the successful launch in 2020, the all-new Sonata quickly became Korea’s best-selling car.
