The Maxima is a full-size car and Nissan's flagship sedan. Spanning over 4 decades, it was originally created for the North American market along with the Middle East and China.

To date, there have been 8 generations of design, the first coming to market in 1980 replacing the 1st generation Datsun 810. In fact, the 2nd generation Datsun 810 was literally rebadged ‘Maxima.’

The Maxima was originally available as either a sedan or wagon and had a 5-speed manual gearbox. It was the second Nissan to ever use US-sourced parts (the first being the Borg Warner T-5), and the first to feature spoken voice warnings for things like open doors and keys in the ignition.

The second-generation (1985) was front-wheel driven and had a number of luxury amenities on both the GXE and SE trims i.e. digital touch entry system, power windows, power seats and a remote trunk release.

There was a big redesign for the 1988 model and as such was remarketed as a 4-door sports car with a 3-liter V6 160 hp engine. It was at this point that Nissan introduced the Maxima to the European market.

Fast forward to 2016 and the Maxima, despite looking extremely different, stays true to the original concept of the 4 door sports car. Described now as having an ‘athletic body’ the Maxima produces 300 hp, has 6 exterior color options and three trim levels, SV, SR and Platinum. It is built on the D platform created by the Japanese automaker that is also used under the Altima.

There was a midnight edition brought out for the SR to celebrate its 40th anniversary. It featured blacked-out chrome and ruby slate grey pearl paint.

The later models were designed by Giovanny Arruba and Jackie Chang (responsible for the exterior and interior respectively) and manufactured at the Smyrna Tennessee Assembly plant.
