The GMC Sierra is a series of full-size pickup trucks that GMC has manufactured since 1999. It is nearly identical to its corporate cousin the Chevrolet Silverado.

The most significant difference between the two is that GMC’s model is the original and is one generation older. This puts it in its fifth generation as of 2019.

The model size is indicated by the numbering system, starting with the smallest option being the Sierra 1500. These pickups transition to the heavy-duty category with the 4500HD, up to the 6500HD.

As a full-size pickup, it faces competition from the Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tacoma, and of course the Ford F-Series. There is a direct competitor for each size option, like the Sierra 1500 competing with the F-150.

Trim levels include Pro, followed by the SLE, SLT, AT4, and the top-of-the-line Denali. Interestingly, the Pro trim level is actually the base option.

Cab configurations are the same as those typically found in pickup trucks. These include the 2-door regular cab, 2-door extended, and 4-door crew cab. Box options are set to match the cab length and come with the options of standard, long, and short.

Powertrains are the same as found in Chevrolet Silverado models.

These have included a number of gasoline options typically ranging between 4.4-liter V6s through to performance powertrains that are always V8 engines in excess of 6-liter. The newest generation also features the smallest petrol to date, a turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-4.

Diesel powertrains range similarly, going up to the 6.6-liter Duramax V8 found in some of the larger models in the Sierra series.

GMC has also announced a fully-electric version of the Sierra Denali, which is planned to be released in 2023.
