The BMW X3 is a subcompact crossover SUV that the German company has manufactured since 2003. During this time on the market, BMW has released three generations as of 2017.

Each generation has a unique designation code based on its platform. These are the E83, F25, and G01 respectively.

Despite having different platforms, all three generations have shared a 5-door layout. Drivetrains have included front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive. The second generation is when the xDrive all-wheel drive system was debuted and rear-wheel drive is reserved for the rear-motor electric iX3 and base sDrive models.

In terms of sizing, the X3 represents the middle of the pack in the BMW SUV lineup. It sits between the smaller X1 and the larger X5.

It stands up against competitors like the Audi A5 and Volvo XC60. The Audi also represents its biggest rival other than its sibling the X5.

Trim levels are based on the drivetrain and powertrain selection and have changed slightly with each generation.

The most notable options for the latest model are the base sDrive30i, xDrive30i, xDrive30e, M40i, X3 M, and finally X3 M Competition. The base sDrive is also available in the smaller engine configuration sDrive20i.

The xDrive30e features a hybrid powertrain. The M40i along with the two M packages represent the top of the range models with a number of added features and performance upgrades.

Diesel trims range from sDrive18d to the M40d package.

Engine sizes usually range between 2-liter inline-4s and 3-liter inline-6s for both petrol and diesel options. These are all turbocharged as of the third generation and some are twin-turbocharged in the performance models.

Additionally, there is the BMW iX3 which is a battery-electric version that is fitted with a synchronous motor. This version made its debut in 2020.
