The BMW X1 is a series of subcompact crossover SUVs that BMW has manufactured since 2009. There have been a total of three generations released. The newest version was introduced to the market in 2022.

BMW has given these generations the designations of E84, F48, and U11, respectively.

The X1 has consistently featured a 5-door layout for all generations. Drivetrains have offered various drivetrains from rear-wheel to front-wheel and finally all-wheel drive for each version. These are called sDrive and xDrive respectively.

It represents the smallest model in BMW’s SUV lineup as it is found below both the X3 and X5. It also shares many mechanical components with the X2.

Competitors outside the brand are the Volvo XC40 and Jaguar E-Pace. However, the main competition is from rivals Audi’s Q3 and Mercedes-Benz’s GLA.

Trim levels for all generations of the X1 consist of the base SE, followed by Sport, XLine, and M Sport. Despite the M designation, the M Sport only features a small number of upgrades and does not represent the high-performance versions offered in BMW’s other M models.

Petrol engines range from a turbocharged smaller 1.5-liter inline-3 to a turbocharged 3-liter inline-6 found in the first version. Diesel powertrains range accordingly but top out with a turbocharged 2-liter inline-4. These larger diesel options can also come twin-turbocharged.

Hybrid powertrains were introduced in the second generation. The latest version comes with both plug-in and mild hybrid powertrains for both diesel and petrol options. These versions are distinguishable by the ‘e’ found at the end of their model name, such as “xDrive30e.”

BMW mated these engines with several different transmissions. These consist of a 6-speed manual and automatics, a 7-speed DCT, and an 8-speed automatic.
