The Xterra is a truck-based compact SUV manufactured by the Japanese car company Nissan between the years 1999 – 2015.

It shared the same platform with the Frontier pickup, with many parts exactly the same, namely the bumper, windshield and front doors.

Nissan built the Xterra with a focus on durability & cost over luxury. Featuring a body-on-frame configuration, the SUV was manufactured at both the Smyrna Assembly plant and at Canton Mississippi with parts sent in from Brazil and China.

Nissan advertised using the strapline ‘Everything you need and nothing you don’t’ for the first generation of pickups and made just two trim levels available; XE and SE. The former produced 143 hp using a 3.3-litre V6 engine.

Just two years later, the Xterra underwent a facelift (change to the front end and instrument panel) which was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show. The power was increased here too, with the engine now producing 180 hp. The front seats were improved to better the lumbar support and a subwoofer was installed taking up a little of the cargo space.

In 2005, Nissan debuted their second-generation Xterra at the New York International Auto Show and changed the platform to the F-Alpha making the vehicle's size much larger. The engine was the 4-liter VQ40DE.

In 2009 production moved wholly to Canton Mississippi where a facelift saw new trim levels; X S Pro-4X which could be chosen with a 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic. These vehicles were part-time 4-wheel drive and had new optional extras including Bluetooth, hands-free controls, sunglass holder, smartphone connectivity, heated front seats and 16 inch alloy wheels.

In 2015 the Xterra was withdrawn from the Northern American market due to a culmination of poor fuel economy, declining sales and mandatory new safety measures.
