The Volkswagen Touareg is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV that has been a part of the VW lineup since 2002.

The Touareg has a front-engine, 5-door configuration and is typically fitted with a four-wheel-drive 4motion layout. The newest platform used for the Touareg is the Volkswagen Group MLB Evo, the same used for several Audis and the Porsche Macan.

As the largest SUV in the VW product line, the Touareg is considered the larger sibling to both the Tiguan and T-Roc.

There have only been three generations of the Touareg since its creation in 2002, although these have received multiple updates over the years.

The SUV has been developed alongside the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne since its initial creation. This was updated in 2020 to include the development of the Audi Q8.

Engine sizes have decreased steadily over the years, with the first-generation models having the largest. Petrol engines for the first and second-generation Touaregs ranged from the 3.2-literVR6 FSI to the 6-liter W12 FSI.

Diesel engines for these models ranged from 2.5-liter R5 TDI to the 5-liter V10 TDI.

The third-generation Touareg comes with several engine options that are notably larger than the majority of the Volkswagen lineup. Petrol options include the 2-liter TFSI inline-4 and the turbocharged 3-liter V6 TSI found in the R plug-in hybrid.

Diesel options consist of either a 3-liter V6 TDI or a twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 TDI.

Transmissions for the Touareg have been 8-speed automatic since the second generation. Prior to this, first-generation Touaregs had the option of either a 6-speed manual or automatic.

These larger engine sizes have allowed Touaregs to tow up to 3,500 kg / ~7,720 lbs comfortably.
