The VW Golf is a compact, small family car. The first generation of the Golf was released in 1974. It is one of the best-selling models in Volkswagen’s lineup since its first release.
There have been eight generations of this compact car. Each generation has been named with the prefix “Mk” convention which stands for the Mark number. The current VW Golf is the Mk8.
The fourth generation VW Golf was released in 1997 and continued in production until 2003. This made it the first Golf to enter the new millennium.
The Golf has typically come as either a 3-door or 5-door hatchback, but there have been a number of variants over the years. In recent years, the 3-door version has generally been reserved for the hot hatch GTI and R versions.
The most notable of the other variants are the Cabriolet and Jetta, which are convertibles and sedans respectively. There is also the Alltrack version, a crossover estate version.
The Golf itself can also be seen as the bigger sibling to the VW Polo.
Engine options vary depending on the model of Golf, but most models have come with engines ranging from 1.5-liter to 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinders. There have also been various diesel options.
Trim levels for the latest Golf include Life, Active, Style, and R-Line. Older models typically were given Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and R-Line.
Volkswagen has released two models of the Golf with electric or hybrid drivetrains. The e-Golf was unveiled in 2013, while the Golf GTE was released a year later in 2014.
