About Land Rover

Land Rover the automobile manufacturer was originally a model of its own sold under the Rover brand until it was spun off onto its own in 1978.

The model that the new Land Rover company was based on was then referred to as the Defender.

Another similar model called the Range Rover was created in 1970 by Rover after many years of development, offering similar offroad capabilities with a more luxurious finish.

When the Land Rover brand and model were sold off to British Leyland it included the Range Rover during the late-1960s.

Then in the 1990s BMW purchased the brands and launched the second generation Range Rover followed by the Land Rover Freelander – a lightweight unibody offroad capable line.

Just ten years later Ford took over Land Rover as well as Jaguar from BMW and launched several new lines including the Range Rover Sport.

Then roll forward another ten years and both brands then ended up in the arms of Indian steel and automobiles conglomerate Tata Motors where it continues to this day operating as Jaguar Land Rover or JLR.
